Common raccoons are very widespread and adaptable animals ranging from woodland and prairie into towns and cities where their opportunistic nature can present a problem with them scavanging through waste bins. Raccoons are active both day and night and although solitary, will congregate in groups where food is plentiful. Females will build nests under buildings, in holes in trees or amoung rocks to raise their young which emerge from the nest at 9 weeks and are fully self dependent after six months. Raccoons are exceptional climbers, are very intelligent and agile, being able to break into livestock enclosures by working out how to manipulate catches. They will also clean food before they eat it and have very sensitive, dextrous paws.
